Start-up relief systems for a controlled compressor start

When a compressor is started, existing back pressure and pressure differentials can increase the load on the unit. A suitable start-up relief system reduces this load during the ramp-up phase and facilitates a controlled transition to normal operating conditions.

Particularly in the case of units operating against existing system pressure, this relief can play a vital role during the start-up phase.

How does start-up relief work?

During the start-up phase, the start-up relief ensures that the unit can initially start under unloaded pressure conditions.

With the Aeromat, this process takes place automatically. The valve remains open during the start-up phase and closes automatically as soon as the unit reaches a defined speed. The closing time can be adjusted to suit the system’s requirements.

The system can then build up to its normal operating pressure.

Why are compressors unloaded during start-up?

Any existing back pressure can increase the starting torque required. By unloading the compressor during the start-up phase, it can initially run up under more favourable pressure conditions.

In this way, the start-up unloading facilitates a controlled start and the subsequent transition to normal system operation.
