Type 11/Type 12 Safety Relief Valve: automatic pressure relief as system pressure rises

The SBV Type 11/Type 12 safety relief valve is designed to automatically release gas from a pressurised pipe as soon as the pressure in the system to be protected rises to and exceeds the set response pressure. If the system pressure subsequently falls below the closing pressure, the valve closes again automatically.

The SBV is designed for gases in accordance with DVGW Worksheet G260 and non-corrosive gases. Special versions are available for other gases.

For Type 11, W2 specifies an operating range of 0.03 to 8.0 bar, a permissible pressure rating of up to 25 bar and an operating temperature range of −15 to +60 °C. The valve can be installed in any position; the outlet must be vented to the open air.

Automatic operation without auxiliary power

The direct-acting, spring-loaded principle utilises the system pressure to be maintained. When the set pressure is reached, the valve opens and closes automatically again once there has been a sufficient drop in pressure.

Low-maintenance design for Type 11

With the Type 11, maintenance can be carried out on site without removing the unit. The simple design contains few wearing parts; no special tools are required for maintenance.

Special versions for other gases

The standard application covers gases in accordance with DVGW Worksheet G260 and non-corrosive gases. Appropriate special versions can be supplied for other gases.

Diaphragm, set-point spring and valve

The safety relief valve operates using a spring-loaded diaphragm. The components essential to its operating principle include the diaphragm and diaphragm plate, the set-point spring and spring plate, and the valve with its seal and adjustment spindle.

The pressure to be controlled enters beneath the diaphragm via the inlet. The set-point spring exerts a force on the diaphragm and, depending on its setting, determines the pressure at which the valve responds. On the Type 11, the setting is adjusted using the cross-handle.

How the safety relief valve works

If the pressure to be controlled rises to such an extent that the force acting on the diaphragm overcomes the set spring force, the diaphragm lifts together with the valve. This allows the gas to be vented via the outlet.

If the pressure subsequently falls below the value required for closure, the spring moves the valve back to the closed position. The safety relief valve therefore operates in a direct-acting manner and without external power.

The outlet of the safety relief valve must be vented to the atmosphere. On the Type 11, the inlet and outlet are designed as G1/2 connections for Ø16 × 1.5 tubing; venting is via a G1/4 connection for Ø12 × 1.5 tubing.
