The gas expansion turbine is designed as a partially pressurized axial turbine with synchronous generator. It provides for moderate relaxation with a slight reduction in pressure. As a result, the temperature reduction due to the Joule-Thompson effect is also low, so that no additional preheating of the natural gas is necessary.

Applications
The gas expansion turbine can be used to generate electricity directly in the gas pressure regulator station. The turbine has no influence on the outlet pressure, which remains constant.

The working method
The generator is located in the pressure line, so it is cooled by the gas flowing through it.
The gas flows through the circularly arranged nozzles and pressurizes the impeller arranged behind it. This sits directly on the shaft of the generator and drives it.
A gas-tight cable bushing is used to lead the electricity out of the pipe and then to the electrical room. The electricity is conditioned in a feed-in device and either fed into the power grid or directly to a consumer.
The product video
The original concept was developed by Innogy in collaboration with TU Dortmund University. The first prototype has been in use for Innogy since 2015. The current version has been further developed by W2 Armaturen GmbH together with EVB Technik GmbH and is now ready for operation. The first turbine was installed in the 3rd quarter of 2020.
The turbine is maintenance-free.
The chosen design means that no additional preheating of the gas or cooling of the motor is necessary. As the motor is in its own medium, there is no explosive atmosphere inside the oxygen-free pipe.
